Carnatic Music

Carnatic classical music is one of the most powerful and ancient forms of Indian classical music, with roots tracing back to the Vedic period. The term Carnatic music is believed to have come into prominence during the Middle Ages, particularly under the reign of Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire. The existing South Indian musical traditions, developed by the Yadavas, flourished and evolved within the Vijayanagara Empire, giving rise to what is now known as Carnatic music. Based on the melodic framework of raga and tala, numerous compositions were created between the 12th and 16th centuries, with improvisation forming a vital aspect of this rich musical tradition.

What you will learn:

Carnatic classical music is introduced from the basic foundation level, and no prior musical experience is required.

Students are gradually trained in sense of pitch, swaras, ear training, swara recognition, and basic rhythm, following a clear step-by-step approach to build strong musical awareness.

The curriculum includes Varases, Alankaras, Geethes, Jathiswaras, Varnams, Kritis, Devaranamas, and Vachanas, along with the relevant music theory.

Through this structured learning, students master the fundamentals and are prepared to appear for certification exams upon completion of the syllabus.

A strong foundation in Carnatic music also builds the confidence to explore and perform other forms of music.

Bhavageete

Kannada Bhavageete/ Sugama Sangeeta/ Light Music, is a unique musical form that has evolved in Karnataka over several decades. True to its name, bhavageetes are emotion-rich melodies, where renowned Kannada poets have gifted us profound literature in the form of poems, later set to music by contemporary composers. I am glad to be teaching bhavageete, preserving its essence while guiding students to express both melody and emotion beautifully

What you will learn

Poem:

Bhavageetes by various poets are taught with focus on lyrics, pronunciation, and meaning, along with a brief introduction to the poet, helping students connect deeply with the song’s emotion and expression.

Tune:

A step-by-step approach is followed to ensure the student understands the song thoroughly and gains confidence in singing it.

Basic voice culture is introduced initially, with short sessions focused on voice control and pitch accuracy.

Songs are first taught by demonstration, and simple practices like active listening play an important role in learning.

Since melody is key in genres like bhavageete, students are gradually guided to develop voice modulation to bring out the right melody at the right places.

Rhythm:

Rhythm pattern is explained to the student and will be shown along with singing.

A clear explanation is given on the pattern with related examples.

The student will repeat the same as taught.

Metronome is used initially to give a clear idea of the rhythm pattern.
